Former Democratic U.S. presidents Joe Biden and Bill Clinton on Monday praised Republican President Donald Trump for his role in mediating a ceasefire in the Gaza war, a rare cross-party commendation for a Republican president.
Biden, whose term ended last January, said in a post on X: “I commend President Trump and his team for their work in securing the renewed ceasefire agreement.”
He added that the Middle East is now “on the road to peace” with support from the United States and its international partners.
Biden also pointed to the role of his own administration in the negotiations, saying it “worked tirelessly to bring hostages home, deliver relief to Palestinian civilians, and end the war” that began in October 2023 during his presidency.
Clinton wrote on X: “President Trump and his administration, Qatar and other regional parties deserve significant credit for keeping everyone engaged until an agreement was reached.”
Clinton urged Israel and Hamas, with U.S. backing, to “turn this fragile moment into lasting peace,” saying he believes that is possible if both sides work together.
Clinton, who served as president from 1993 to 2001, had been one of Trump’s most prominent critics, accusing him in the past of pursuing policies based more on personal interest than the public good.
