Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Monday that Italy’s recognition of a Palestinian state is closer after the start of implementing the peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Gaza.
Meloni added in remarks to reporters after the Sharm el-Sheikh summit: “It is clear that if the plan is implemented, recognition of a Palestinian state will become closer. I support Palestine being an independent state, and when the conditions set by Parliament are met, of course we will recognise it.”
The Italian prime minister commented on the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, saying she had met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
She added: “We discussed the next steps to implement the peace plan, and I affirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting the stability of the Gaza Strip, its reconstruction and development, and to relaunching the political process to find a framework for peace, security and stability in the Middle East, on the basis of a two-state solution.”
