A 5.8-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Algeria.

Al-Khamisa News Network - Gaza

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Tebessa province in eastern Algeria, near the border with Tunisia, on Sunday evening.

The Algerian Research Center in Astronomy, Astrophysics, and Geophysics stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 10 kilometers southeast of the town of Negrin, and its effects extended to western regions of Tunisia.

Minutes after the initial tremor, the area recorded a 4.7-magnitude aftershock. The Civil Defense confirmed that no human or material losses were recorded during the initial survey.

It's worth noting that earthquakes are not new to Algeria. Last week, a 3.2-magnitude tremor was recorded in the southern province of Laghouat. A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Oran, northwestern Algeria, in 2022, and a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Mila and nearby towns in 2020. None of these occurred without any reported casualties.

The country's northern regions are prone to seismic activity. The last devastating earthquake, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, struck in May 2003 in Boumerdes province, east of the Algerian capital, killing more than 2,000 people and causing significant material damage.
