Meta's Hypernova smart glasses could be as expensive as the iPhone 17

Meta is set to launch its first smart glasses with a display next month, and the first leaks have emerged regarding the upcoming product's pricing.

The new glasses, internally codenamed Hypernova, are expected to have an initial price tag lower than their previously anticipated $1,000.

Meta's Ray-Ban sunglasses range in price from $200 to $400, but during development of its new model, Meta planned for a price of at least $1,000 for the HyperNova, with some discussion of a price as high as $1,400, according to a report by Live Mint, citing a Bloomberg newsletter.

Meta's previous pricing meant the new smart glasses were priced higher than the base and Plus iPhone 16 models, and possibly even the upcoming iPhone 17. However, the tech giant is now said to have found a way to lower the price of its smart glasses to around $800.

The supposed lower starting price is attributed to Meta's willingness to accept lower profit margins to boost demand for its new product. However, different design options and prescription lenses could raise the price significantly.

The new Hypernova glasses are a precursor to full-fledged augmented reality glasses, likely featuring a small screen for apps and notifications on the right lens, and also controllable via a neural wrist accessory, the same accessory previously seen in Meta's prototype Orion AR glasses.

The smart glasses are also likely to come with dedicated apps for taking and viewing photos and accessing maps. The new glasses may also support receiving notifications from phone apps, including Meta's suite of apps, such as WhatsApp and Messenger.

Like other Meta devices, the new glasses are said to run a highly customized version of Android, although no app store is expected to be available for them yet.
