Japan intends to recognise Palestinian state

Al-Khamisa News Network - Gaza

According to a report published by the Japanese newspaper “Mainichi Shimbun”, the Japanese government is currently considering the possibility of recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state.

The official announcement is expected to be accepted and formally discussed at the United Nations General Assembly on September 22. At the same time, Tokyo has stated that its fundamental position is support for a two-state solution.

According to the report, the government is currently weighing the most effective diplomatic step at this stage, noting that the United States and Israel strongly oppose unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The debate in Japan joins a wave of political stirrings in Europe and other countries, where discussion about recognizing Palestine is expanding. Tokyo says its goal is to contribute to regional stability and to find a comprehensive political solution, but it is not yet clear whether a decision will be made in September or postponed.
