The U.S. site Axios reported, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter, that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an official apology to the Qatari prime minister over the bombing of the Qatari capital, Doha.
Axios said, “Netanyahu spoke with the Qatari prime minister and apologized for violating Qatar’s sovereignty in the attack on Doha,” adding, “Netanyahu expressed regret over the death of a Qatari security officer in the attack on Doha.”
The source said the apology came during a phone call from Netanyahu to the Qatari prime minister, while U.S. President Donald Trump was meeting with the Israeli prime minister at the White House to discuss Trump’s proposal to end the war in Gaza.
A diplomatic source told Al Jazeera that “the call was initiated by Trump and the talks took place with all three parties participating.”
On Sept. 20, Axios said Qatar had conditioned resuming its mediation role in efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza on receiving an official apology from Israel over the attack that targeted Hamas leaders in Doha.
On Sept. 9, Israel attempted to assassinate Hamas’s negotiating delegation in Qatar through a large-scale aerial attack involving multiple warplanes, which struck several buildings and civilian residential apartments in the capital, Doha.
