The spokesman for the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip, Mahmoud Bassal, revealed on Thursday evening the scale of the massive destruction caused by the ongoing assault by Israeli forces on Gaza City over the course of just one week.
Bassal said in a statement that infrastructure and residential areas suffered widespread destruction, and that more than 50,000 residents in Gaza, including children, women and the elderly, were left homeless in less than a week amid a worsening humanitarian disaster.
He pointed to the destruction of 12 residential buildings of more than seven storeys each, containing around 500 apartments, which led to the displacement of more than 10,000 people.
The Civil Defense spokesman called on the United Nations and the international community to intervene immediately to stop the assault and protect civilians.
He urged humanitarian and relief organizations to work to provide alternative shelter and essential supplies of food, medicine and other urgent needs for the displaced.
