Police in the British city of Manchester said on Thursday they are responding to a major incident outside a synagogue on Middleton Street and that they have shot a man they believe carried out a stabbing and vehicle-ramming attack.
In a statement, the police said they received a report at 9:31 a.m. from a member of the public who said he saw a car heading towards a crowd of pedestrians and that a man had been stabbed.
They added that armed units were dispatched at 9:34 a.m., as further calls reported that a security guard had been attacked with a knife.
The police declared the emergency plan “PLATO” and designated the incident a “major incident” at 9:37 a.m.
They said that at 9:38 a.m. armed officers fired shots, wounding a man believed to be the attacker.
They added that paramedics are providing medical care to a number of people, including four who were injured in the vehicle-ramming and stabbings.
Police urged the public to avoid the area while they continue to respond to the incident.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said the immediate danger “appears to have passed” after police fired at the attacker.
