Lapid: Egypt’s proposal for an Arab force undermines peace accords and proves Netanyahu government’s failure

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid said the report concerning Egypt’s proposal to establish an Arab force to confront Israeli attacks is a severe blow to peace agreements, and he called for the government to be replaced.

Lapid wrote on the platform “X”: “The report concerning Egypt’s proposal to establish a joint Arab force to confront Israeli attacks represents a severe blow to the peace agreements, which came directly after the severe blow to the Abraham Accords, which came directly after the overwhelming majority of allied countries voting in favor of establishing a Palestinian state.”

He added: “This government has shaken our international standing. A deadly mix of irresponsibility, amateurism and arrogance is tearing us apart in the world. They must be replaced before it is too late.”

A video circulated on social media in Egypt of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi speaking ten years ago about the need to form a unified Arab defense force.

On March 29, 2015, the Arab League Council approved a proposal submitted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to create a joint Arab force aimed at preserving and safeguarding Arab national security.

Although the Egyptian initiative came amid rising security threats in the region — notably the growth of groups such as ISIS and the collapse of Arab states — the joint Arab force never materialized in practice, due to a lack of strategic consensus among key Arab states, weak implementation and financing mechanisms, and political and security sensitivities among the parties.

Israel launched an unprecedented attack on the Qatari capital Doha last Tuesday, targeting a meeting of the Hamas negotiating delegation, but the assassination attempt failed, and the attack was met with widespread international and Arab condemnation.
