Majority of Americans Believe Israel is Overreacting in Gaza and Support Palestinian Statehood

A new poll released this Wednesday afternoon by the Ipsos Institute for Public Opinion and Reuters News Agency shows that 59% of Americans now believe that the Israeli military operation in Gaza is excessive.

This poll adds to a series of surveys conducted over the past year that highlight the significant damage to Israel’s image in the United States due to its aggression in Gaza.

By comparison, a similar survey conducted in February 2024, four months after the October 7 attack, found that 53% of participants thought Israel’s response was excessive, while 42% disagreed. In the latest poll, those who believe Israel overreacted increased by 6% to 59%, while those who support Israel’s stance decreased by 9% to 33%.

In the new survey, conducted over six days and concluded on Tuesday, 58% of Americans said they believe that every United Nations member state should now recognize Palestine as a state.
