Popular Front: Dismissal of lawsuit against UNRWA a legal victory affirming the agency’s legitimacy

The Department of Refugee Affairs and the Right of Return of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (one of the PLO factions) welcomed the decision of the U.S. federal court in New York to dismiss the lawsuit against UNRWA, calling it an important legal victory that thwarts Israeli efforts to criminalize the agency and undermine its international legitimacy.
The department said in a statement received by Quds Press that “the ruling cements UNRWA’s status as a UN body enjoying legal immunity, delivers a blow to Israeli claims aimed at erasing the refugee issue, and reaffirms the agency’s international role as a witness to the crime of forcible displacement of our people in 1948 and as a symbol of the ongoing right of return.”
It called for increased political and financial support for UNRWA, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which it said is facing a war of extermination and systematic starvation, stressing the need to continue the legal and political battle to protect the refugee cause from attempts at liquidation and uprooting.
