The Prisoners’ Media Office said today that prisoner Bilal Ya’qub al-Barghouti (49) from the town of Beit Rima has been subjected to serious and repeated abuses inside Gilboa prison, asserting that the prison administration deliberately assaults him in brutal ways.
The prisoner’s family said that among the repeated violations, guards have poured boiling water on his hands, causing burns, in addition to continuous beatings in areas not covered by cameras, intended to inflict harm without oversight.
Al-Barghouti, detained since 2002, is serving 17 life sentences and suffers from deteriorating health, most notably the loss of one kidney, as well as chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gout, and the skin disease scabies, amid a complete denial of medical treatment and his isolation in a room devoid of light and air.
The office said the treatment of al-Barghouti amounts to systematic torture and a slow execution, holding the occupying authorities fully responsible for his life and calling for urgent intervention by human rights and humanitarian organizations to save him and end the serious violations he is facing.
