Russian President Vladimir Putin commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza.
He said at the annual Valdai Discussion Club forum in Sochi that he would be prepared to support the plan “only if it leads to the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.”
Putin reiterated his support for Trump’s plan today and also endorsed the proposal to create an international body to administer Gaza, chaired by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair: “He is a seasoned politician and can play a positive role.”
Putin described the situation in Gaza as “dire,” adding that it would be better for the Palestinian Authority, led by Abu Mazen, to govern Gaza.
The Russian president concluded by saying: “The fundamental issue is the opinion of the Palestinians — including Hamas — on the matter.”
He added: “We have a relationship with Hamas, and it is important that it supports it as well. The Gaza issue cannot be resolved except through the establishment of a Palestinian state.”
